Go Multilingual: How to Make Money Online in International Markets

Let’s start with a truism: the web is global.Anyone from Kansas and Kentucky, to Kenya and Korea can access the same online information, at the same time but from completely different corners of the Earth. And that really is rather amazing, even if most of us do now take it for granted.

But what does that mean for all the web designers, bloggers, entrepreneurs and businesses of the world? Well, anyone in business will probably have a website already, and if you don’t, then you really should reconsider your position as a business person.
And those who simply blog to let off some steam or get their thoughts, views or expert analysis out into the wider world may not even be thinking in monetary terms yet – be it dollars, pounds or yen.

Indeed, some blogs never get more than a handful of visitors, whilst others mushroom into something quite incredible – look no further than Mashable for such an example.

But the one thing that all websites have in common is they’re global. Digital has helped blur international boundaries, which means there is a need to write, design and communicate with the wider-world in mind.

Running an online business can be an incredibly lucrative endeavor if executed correctly. And if you’ve only thus far operated in English, you should probably realize that:

So whether you’re just launching a new internet enterprise, or you’re simply reaching saturation point in your domestic market, you could do a lot worse than look to foreign lands to increase your revenue.

There are three key considerations you need to make when constructing a website to be ‘multilingual friendly’, and these are: design, localization and optimization.

A design for life

By the design, we’re talking about both the behind the scenes structure and the front end interface. Don’t worry…this won’t get too technical.

Okay, whether you design your website yourself, or have someone do it for you, remember this: not all languages are the same length. Crazy, huh?

German tends to use pretty long words compared to its English equivalents Bãstenhalter, is a bra for instance. And some languages are a lot shorter than English – æƒ… å ± is Japanese for ‘information’ – a mere two characters.

Why do you need to know this? Well, because if you ever convert your blog/website into other languages you may end up not having enough space for your text, or you may end up having large blank spaces, depending on what language you you’re translating into (see more on translation in the ‘localization’ part below).

To get around this issue you need to keep your content and design separate – text must be allowed to expand/contract without space issues, so you’re best using cascading style sheets (CSS) which help keep these two aspects apart. Ultimately it means you won’t have to redesign your pages from scratch in other languages.

From the front end perspective, it’s worth remembering that colors and symbols can mean different things in different cultures.

For example, an ‘owl’ is normally symbolic of wisdom and grace in western cultures. But in many Arabic countries, owls can represent pessimism.

And if you happen to have a picture of a green hat on your website (maybe you sell hats online?), in China this signifies a man’s wife has been unfaithful to him. In addition to your graphics, color also plays a big part in your website’s ‘look and feel’ – and colors can mean different things across the globe.

Red, for example, tends to denote danger or passion in western countries. But red can also mean communism in some countries (e.g. Russia). Similarly, orange is the color of Halloween or ‘fall’ in the US, in Ireland Orange is synonymous with Protestantism.

There are many similar examples which help to demonstrate the meaning of color. Ever wonder why blue is used so much on the Web (e.g. Facebook, Twitter)? It’s the most universally ‘safe’ color and it generally denotes ‘trust’.

Going local…

There’s an old adage that to go global, you need to think local. Now, the chances are you won’t have a big marketing/translation budget, so you need to do what you can with the tools at your disposal. Luckily, you can do quite a lot with the right approach.

Machine translation is often berated for its inaccurate, often comical results. But if truth be told, the likes of Google Translate isn’t actually all that bad…if you’re nice to it.

Google Translate will struggle if you give it text ridden with jargon and colloquialisms. And you also have to remember that English suffers somewhat of an excess of different words that mean the same thing: dog, mutt, hound; cash, money, bucks; chow, food, fodder. You get the point.

So by learning what Google translate likes, and what it doesn’t, you can control your English text so that you increase your chance of getting a good translation. This will, of course, take time to hone.

For proper localization, however, you ideally want a native speaking translator involved at some stage, even if it’s just to edit/proofread the text to ensure it is accurate and doesn’t embarrass you too much.

This also means you can have a more flexible approach to your English writing, knowing that anything contentious from the machine will be picked up by the human!

In Google we trust…

The subject of multilingual SEO probably merits an entire article to itself. But for the sake of cutting to the chase, the one golden tenet of international website optimization is this: never translate your keywords directly into other languages.

Even a professionally qualified, native linguist won’t know what people use to search for services and products locally. Hence, a correct dictionary translation of your high-ranking English keywords may be well wide of the mark. People may use abbreviations, synonyms or other variations of the search term, and this can only be established by doing some thorough keyword research for each of your target markets.

Don’t Rush to Update WordPress

Gosh, I just love sharing my little blogging horror stories with you.

It’s not my intention to scare you or dissuade you from blogging. I just want you to be aware of the mistakes that I’ve made, so you won’t make them as well.

BTW, in case you don’t know — before getting into affiliate marketing and blogging, I was an air traffic controller.

The most useful phrase I learned during that time was:

“Learn from the mistakes of others; you’ll not live long enough to make them all yourself”.

Anyway, this little lesson comes from a WordPress upgrade that I completely botched.

All would have been fine had I bothered to stop, think and follow my own basic instructions — backup your blog prior to upgrading to the latest version of WordPress.

But after a number of successful automatic updates to other blogs, I ignored my own advice and just hit the “Click Here to Automatically Upgrade WordPress to latest Version ___” link on the AffiliateBloggerPRO member blog.

Initially, I saw nothing wrong with the blog’s functionality, so I went on my merry way.

A couple of days later I realized what a mess I’d made.

Very few of the images were working. All those that had been uploaded via the WordPress administration to the wp-content/uploads/ folder were no longer linked correctly. In fact, some of the images had been deleted.

I started getting “Allowed memory size of 33554432″ errors.

Page slugs and image names were changed… then things got worse.

One new member had somehow acquired ID #1, which had been mine. All my posts on both the blog and the BuddyPress forum were now attributed to that new member.

‘Members’ refers to those members who joined through the Wishlist Member software, not as registered members via the WordPress interface.

And therein was the problem.

The Wishlist Member software is the crucial component in making that site run properly, and I hadn’t checked the developer’s site to make sure that it integrated with the WordPress update.

Had I bothered to do that, I would have seen that Stu and crew were still working to make the latest version of Wishlist Member integrate properly with the new WordPress.

And without a backup, I didn’t have the option to roll back to the previous version of WordPress.

Aargh.

All in all, I wasted nearly a day getting the site back together.

So, you know what the lesson is … again … backup before upgrading!!!

Blog Backups and Cloning Made Easy

I’ve made a point to back up my WordPress database and files routinely over time. These days you can’t afford not to because sites get hacked, code get’s messed up, or databases run into problems. Any one of these things can take a site out of commission and and the logical remedy is to run regular backups.

In theory, restoring a site from a back up shouldn’t be too hard. You save the database and some primary folders that contain the theme and plugins, install WordPress again,and the rest should be easy…unless something goes wrong… and a few weeks ago, something went wrong for me.

I decided to move a fairly small WordPress site from one host to another. I followed the normal routine and then found, when I launched the site at the new location, things got really screwed up.

Somewhere along the way a forum lost all of it’s content, many of the plugins didn’t activate properly, and my theme got screwed up…so basically I found myself having to set the site up all over again. I was really disappointed.

Nevertheless, I kept thinking about the fact that so many other things are incredibly easy with WordPress, but backups continue to be kind of “primitive“. There are a handful of backup plugins that you can install and use but some haven’t been updated in quite awhile and others end up being helpful but they aren’t a complete solution.

A few days later I shared my frustration with a friend of mine and he told me about a new program called WPTwin that is designed to easily and quickly clone or replicate an entire WordPress site from top to bottom. I have to admit, he piqued my interest, but I didn’t buy the software right away.

A few days later however, I went back into that WordPress site I had tried to relocate. I wasn’t even close to getting everything back to it’s original form. It was going to take at least a few hours, if not days of work and it made me sick to even think about all of that.

And then I remembered something one of my online mentors once told me. He said:

“You have to spend the majority of your time being focused and working on things that matter most, and if you’re trying to make money online, you better be focused on generating great content, finding great affiliate offers or products, and building good incoming links for traffic…everything else is minor and usually a distraction!”

And he’s right. You don’t make a dime endlessly tweaking (i.e. fighting with code) to bring a theme to perfection, or while you’re constantly researching that next great article that you can’t seem to get written, or…doing the mundane work of backing up and hopefully restoring a website should the need arise.

With that said, backing up your work is critical, so you might say I finally saw the light of common sense, and bought WPTwin. If it had the potential to save me days of unnecessary work and helped me avoid future frustrations, it was worth my time to test it out!

After getting the program, I read through the instructions and found the replication process to be very simple.

The program contains two php files. The first one is uploaded into the root folder of the WordPress site that you want to clone. Once uploaded, you simply access the url of the php file page and click one button. Usually within about 30 seconds (large sites may take longer and the system has been tested on sites as large as 4 gigs), you’ll have a replication file that’s available for downloading to your computer.

Using the example of moving a website from one host to another, you would simply set up a new WordPress install on the new hosting account. Upload the replication file along with another small php file which contains the deployment code into the root folder of the WordPress install. Then by simply visiting the url of this php file, entering the email that you provided when purchasing WPTwin, and clicking a final button to activate the process, within another 30 seconds or less you’ll have a fully functioning, identical clone to your original site!

After testing the process on one of my sites, I continued to back up and test the deployment of a handful of my other WordPress based sites. Several of these included unique plugins such as the Wishlist Member membership plugin and the Simple Press forum plugin. And in every case the process worked flawlessly!

All content, comments, videos, pictures, settings, login information, and plugins (and their settings) are duplicated precisely. The only thing you’ll likely want to change is in the general settings folder of WordPress where you can change the title of the new site.

The instructions that come with WPTwin are clear and easy to understand but you’ll probably only need to read through them once. It also comes with video tutorials that cover every step in the implementation process should you ever need them. Customer support has been very good at responding to questions in a timely manner and according to them, several updates are planned in future releases, one of which includes a scheduling module to create automatic backups as often as you need them.

With all of my WordPress sites now backed up and secure I’m confident that I won’t ever have to go through the recent turmoil of rebuilding a site from scratch again.

For well under $100 WPTwin has turned out to be one of the best investments I’ve made in software in several years. I simply can’t recommend it highly enough. It finally brings the WordPress back up process up to speed and makes it so easy that anyone can do it without fear and frustration.

ACTIONS Speak Louder Than Words In The Internet Marketing World

You know when you meet that person that makes you roll your eyes because you know they are” full of **it” . Are you that person? Are you giving others advice on what to do when you haven’t actually done it for yourself? It is very easy to do this in the Internet marketing world as there is no real proof that any of us are making money online. Anyone can make a fake screen shot of their supposed payouts and earnings. The only way to prove that you are a successful Internet marketer is to fully expose your business to the world and let them be the judge.

The new generation of “wanna be” Internet marketing guru’s can smell success a mile away. If you think you can get away with trying to engage them with simple words, then you are wrong. These people need to see what actions you are taking to be successful to believe in what you are saying. It sound like a viscous circle because it is. You have to “walk the walk” to “talk the talk”.

What actions speak louder than words in the Internet market world?

1. Having a successful website: This is an action that you cannot fake. Well you can try but you will not get away with it for long. Website visitors in the Internet Marketing world like to research popular websites to see if they can work out how they can replicate this webmasters success. They will check your Google page rank, your Alexa ranking, and sometimes even your back links and social channels. If you have exposed your business for all the world to see then even more detailed information will be available to them.

2. Spreading yourself around to be seen: Everywhere the web visitor turns, there you are.. For example in my case, if you are on Youtube searching for “installing a WordPress website” you would see my video come up number two. If you go to Google search and type in “WordPress website builder” my website comes up as number one. I have only just started taking action with WordPress Website Builder and plan to dominate my area. This does not happen by itself and others are not going to do this for you. Of course your content can spread virally by itself but you need to put it out there, to as many places as you can to build your credibility. Everything about your keyword should lead to you.

3. Number one in Google for your name: If you have a name that is very similar to someone who is already famous then I am very sad for you. Go and change your name now. If your name is unique and you do not have competition then being number one on Google is not enough, you should fill the whole first page with results.These results should all lead to actions you have taken. For example if you Google “Mitz Pantic” I own the first page. The results show some of my websites, some articles on other websites I have written, or other website talking about me. It wasn’t always like that. I have saturated the internet with my name and now Google has no choice but to concede and allow me to own my name.

How do you commit to taking action?

1. Avoid information overload: This is the hardest thing to do. How can you avoid something that could enhance your education and move you forward. Ahh, but is it letting you move forward? I am not saying to eliminate all education and information because that would be wrong. If you do that you will not be able to make your business move with the times. You need to know “what’s hot and what’s not”. What I am recommending is to stick with a few top blogs that provide juicy information to your door. Do not waste time browsing the internet. Sign up for a few blogs rss feeds and be done with it. If you sign up to the right ones, they will provide you with the information you need to stay on top of our ever changing world. Get rid of the rest. It’s that simple.

2. Have a plan and stick to it: Write a plan up on paper , that is if you still know how to hand write, and stick it on your wall right in front of your work area. Promise yourself you will follow your plan and complete something that is listed on this plan everyday. Set an alarm on your mobile phone to ring and remind you to stick to the plan. When the alarm goes off you have to ask yourself if you have completed something from the list. If you haven’t then you better get to work and actually accomplish something! Get your goals in order and focus on them. Take action and know that you will be rewarded in the end.

3. Stop buying courses and Ebooks you do not need or use: Everyone needs an Internet marketing course or a mentor to get started, but how many have you had? Are you a conference junky that keeps gathering information and never does anything with it. I was shocked when I attended an Internet Marketing summit with Brett Mcfall and Tom Hua. There were hundreds of people there and they all knew everything about Internet marketing, however I did not find anyone that actually had a successful website. I am guessing that out of all those people, there will only be a select few that will actually do something, take action and use the information they have learned.

I am the Queen of self discipline as I have always had my own business which relied on me to take action. They could not understand why I had to stick to a schedule when I had no one holding me to it. This is where actions do speak louder than words. I said I was going to do it and I have. Let me tell you a quick story…

Several years ago, when I was a little kid, I used to play with marbles.

The game is simple. First we make a circle on the road using a chalk or a rock (but most likely we play on the dirt since it’s WAY fun) then we “bet” 5 marbles each and put them all inside the circle.

Make Big Money Thinking Small

Everyone seems to want to be the big fish in the big pond these days when it comes to both website traffic and subscribers to their blog. Don’t get me wrong I love looking at my stats page too and I’m no stranger to hitting the F5 key repeatedly hoping that my feed count has gone up. However I’ve learnt over time (the hard way) that its quality and not quantity that really matters when it comes to making real money on the net.

To give you an idea of just how much you can make from so little I’ll give you an example. I have a small blog in the travel sector that never gets more than 50 visitors a day yet consistently makes over $400 a month. To some of you this will sound impossible but when you understand the mechanics of what’s actually happening it’s quite simple. To help prove my case ill list a few essential rules for creating this type of site.

1) The traffic you get to this site must be looking to buy.You will know this if they find your site by typing a buying keyword into Google such as “discount vacations in Colorado”. The fact that they are adding a price modifier such as “discount/cheap/luxury” means this visitor is really thinking about making a purchase, if they find your site using a buying keyword then affiliate commission won’t be far away.

2) I mentioned the phrase “discount vacations in Colorado” above and I really wasn’t joking about building a site around something so specific. You see if a query is very specific it means the person searching for it knows exactly what they want and in most cases they need very little selling to seal the deal. In the marketing industry this is known as the “long tail” which really just another way of saying an obscure or abstract term.

3) Understanding volume is very important when it comes to the long tail. You see many people look down on these terms/phrases in the industry because of the low volume but this is one of main reasons the long tail works so well. Because everyone else is ignoring such a specific but still high value term there can often be very low or in some cases no competition at all. That doesn’t mean there won’t be sites on the net out there that have a page or two on the phrase but because you are going to build a whole site around the term who do you think Google is going to choose?

4) My last essential rule is probably one of the most important but one that many people have as an after-thought. While Google adsense is great for a one size fits all solution it will rarely earn you the most money from your traffic. Instead find a big site who is actually selling this product or service in large volume (so they know what they are doing and know how to convert traffic into sales). Once you’ve signed up to their affiliate program you want to get something from them that you can integrate into your site to help convert your traffic.

Remember everyone ignores banner ads now but something interactive like a search of products or a carousel of latest offers will attract people’s eyes. Also don’t be afraid to put it somewhere prominent on your site, I mean don’t go crazy and have it the full size of your page but somewhere near the top should be fine. Essentially you want it to be the first thing they see and because it’s exactly want they are looking for a sale won’t be far away. They get the product they need and you get the commission for finding it for them, everybody wins!

I don’t want to give the impression that everything I’ve listed is all you need to make some quick and easy money from the Google/website combo. You need some luck in picking the right niche at the right time and also some hard work in promoting the site and building content. However if I can do it I really believe anyone can. Trust me that there is money out there for the little guy if you look in the right places. Until next time, PB.

In the following video, I go on an almost 15 minute rant against MLM (FHTM in particular).

These guys have the audacity to call their business model ‘relationship marketing’, when in fact what folks are doing is destroying relationships with their friends, family and neighbours while trying to recoup hefty investments in this so-called business opportunity.

For your $300 initial investment plus $70 every month thereafter, you get a cookie-cutter site that Google hates and will slap with a duplicate content penalty. Where’s the relationship in THAT?

In the video, I also show how MOST of the reps are making no money at all, based on FHTM’s own income disclosure statement.

The crux of the matter is that you don’t need to put out big bucks to start a business, especially online.

The model is called affiliate marketing, and for a tiny fraction of what you would invest in an MLM opportunity, you can have a real website and you don’t have to pay to promote REAL name brands.

You already know how to install a blog.

You also know which plugins to use to make it functional and how to make it look great with a pretty professional WordPress theme.

You know which pages are must-haves on any blog.

AND you understand the benefits of blogging in terms of getting free traffic, as well as how to use PPC at the local level to reduce advertising costs.

So, why not make money using your knowledge to help businesses in your local area either set up a new blog, or improve an existing web site?

Surely, you’ve come across a few local businesses that could benefit greatly from your blogging knowledge.

I run across awful local business sites all the time.

For example, most of the small resort, motel and private RV park/campground sites I find when doing travel research are just downright ugly. Most of them look like they were designed in 1997 and haven’t been updated since.

Here are two examples…

Typical errors that you find on these sites include:

Fonts and font colors used are either too big, too small, bolded throughout, completely inappropriate or just plain awful. Site navigation is terrible or non-existent, and I refuse to hunt and peck to find either the current rate sheet or a map to the place.Sometimes the pictures do the venue absolutely no justice and probably chase potential visitors away.No thought is given to capturing free traffic through SEO. “Welcome” in H1 isn’t going to bring visitors to XYZ Lodge in ABC county. There is insufficient information posted. Simply placing the words ‘fishing licences’ at the bottom of a page with no link doesn’t tell me anything about what fishing licence I might need to fish in that area, or where to get a fishing licence if I want one.

Those are just a few examples of how these local businesses need help.

Now here’s an example of a resort site that was done right, and it IS a blog.

The blog is attactive and gives visitors all the information they might need, including a number of ways to contact the owners for more information.

Think about it.

How hard would it be to approach a local business and tell them that you can help them get MORE business by helping them improve their online presence?

Use your knowledge about blogging and blog design to make extra money helping local businesses improve their sites or put a blog online.

What makes you think you’re able get wealthy?

This must be an unpleasant question. Most people would answer: “because I’m smart, and I am willing to work hard.” Are you one of those people? If this is your way of thinking, it’s not hard to guess how much you’re getting from Adsense. It’s got to be below thirty dollars a day, huh?

I discovered that being “smart” and willing to work hard is exactly what will NOT make you rich. See, wealthy people are not hard workers. Rich people are aware that the most valuable thing is time, so they do not trade their time. If you’re ready to work 24h a day, it means that you don’t consider your time valuable. Consequently, you end up having no time to think and become poor, no matter how much time you spend working.

Be Lazy

Yes, wealthy people often happen to be lazy. But they don’t stare at TV all day long at the TV, trust me. Instead, they spend time thinking about how to make others do what they need to get done. Poor people are hard workers, whereas wealthy people are hard thinkers. Rich people don’t work for their money. Instead, they make money work for them. If you are willing to spend a lot of time working on your success with Adsense, you are going to loose a lot of time and will never make BIG money. It is because there are just 24 hours available to you every day. Even if you’re crazy enough to work twenty hours, that’s not enough to get wealthy. Respect your time and don’t sell it. Don’t become a freelance self-employed smart laborer. It is impossible to be an internet marketer, webmaster, content writer, search engine optimization specialist at the same time. It takes lots of experience and learning to become a pro at each of those fields. Furthermore, you will end up not having enough time to do all those tasks on a regular basis. Don’t even attempt to do this.

Be stupid

Rich people don’t regard themselves as clever. As a rule, they have quite unclear idea about the market they are in. But they use help of well trained advisers; they hire the top specialists who execute all the job for them. Note, if you consider yourself smart, you begin to believe that you are able to do everything yourself. That’s not the way to get rich. Those who became successful at Adsense work in teams. That is what you must do too.

Don’t confuse job with business

Lots of people don’t know the difference between job and business. To illustrate this, let’s say you’ve designed a high traffic blog that earns thirty dollars a day, for which you write two posts daily. Is it a good business? No, it’s not. That’s a pretty poor job. So, what’s a real business then? Business is a SYSTEM that can be left any time, so that it grows and makes you more and more money whether you’re in or not. That is the main difference between a great blog and Ebay. Or, a single hamburger stand and McDonald’s. Now you can realize why wealthy people don’t sell their time: the truth is, getting paid for your time is the worst use of it. However, if you spend time on designing an autonomous system (asset), it will be paying off as long as you live. In other words, if you’ve spent 1 hour working on the system, you will be getting paid for as many hours as you can live. If you’ve spent 1 hour at the job, you will get paid once. That hour will have no positive financial influence on your future.

Stop saving. Invest!

Poor people usually spend their time and energy on not spending money. Whereas wealthy people focus on multiplying their money. Note saving money is a very old idea that might have worked 30 years ago, but doesn’t work anymore. If you keep your cash in your wallet or bank, the value of it goes down very fast because of the inflation. So, it is important to keep your money working for you, and it’s even more important to play it smart. If you do not know about investing, hire a financial adviser. At the early stage of your Adsense career it is important to invest money in the internet marketing. Spend some money on links and advertisement space that will burst the traffic to your website, and hence, earnings.

A lot of people who have just started their business online are often very naive to think that they can earn a lot of money without having to spend any money. This is not possible, unless you decide to be a self-employed worker who is ready to work for free, hoping to start earning thirty bucks a day at some point in the future. Do you know how much time you need to spend to learn and implement all those skills that are required to earn $30 a day? If you try to calculate how much you’ve earned and how many hours you have spent on creating your online “business” over one year, you will be surprised to find out that you’ve been working hard earning like one buck per hour. Crazy, isn’t?

So you want to get rich soon, and don’t even consider spending a couple of $$$ to get yourself a team? It is not very serious. If you want to get wealthy, you need to be spending some money on a regular basis. You need to pay for internet marketing, professionally written content, search engine optimization services, etc. If you play it smart, it will make you rich. If not, learn your lesson and try again.

What if I don’t have any cash?

Is it what you are thinking? That is the way poor people think, and you can’t do that if you want things to change. Even if you don’t have money, you still can do lots of things to put those ideas into life. How? Here’s just a bunch of thoughts to inspire you:

Write a business plan. It must not be very detailed. Anyone can do it. If you do not have a clue how to do it, hire someone, or learn it – this skill will bring you a lot of money in the future, therefore it is totally worth the time.Send the business plan to potential investors. If your plan makes sense, you will find an investor sooner or later. If you don’t, it means your idea is bad, and that’s how you find out that you need to create a better idea. If the idea is good and the business plan makes sense, it is very easy to find an investor. The challenging part is negotiating the contract, not attracting investor.Apply for a loan – if you do not get enough money from investors, you can apply for a loan at your bank. If your credit history is decent, you have good chances to get a loan.Offer your team some part of your earnings. This way you can create a dedicated team of people who honestly believe in the success of your project. Those employers are very important, since they are aware that it is up to them whether you succeed as a team, or not. Such team is way more active than a group that gets paid per hours.

Try to generate more ideas! Trust me, you are capable of generating much more ideas that will make you rich.

Gee, blog commenters these days have some really strange names.

Like who would think to name their kid “seo strategies“, “plumbing fixtures” or “cheap shoes“?

Seriously, you gotta wonder what some folks are thinking when they post comments like this to a business opportunities / Internet marketing blog like NetProfits Today:

First of all, the NPT blog is about Internet and affiliate marketing, so WHY would a knowledgeable blog commenter use a name like “weddings” or “buy LCD TV” to try and attract traffic to their site?

Uh, they wouldn’t.

It’s unlikely that “cheap shoes” will get their comment approved on professional blogs.

Business bloggers immediately see that “cheap shoes” is probably a spammer or a complete newbie who has wasted money on a bad training course. And it makes me feel sad when “cheap shoes” actually does leave a good comment, but they’ve contravened my blog commenting policy so I can’t approve their comment.

The policy specifically states that “‘nice post, thanks’ type comments from “Buy LCD TV” posters will be marked as spam, so it is in your best interest to contribute to the conversation as a real person, if you are looking for some link love.”

I have no desire to reward cheap traffic seekers who contribute nothing of value.

Even if the comment does get approved, it’s too much of a crap shoot to hope that people who are interested in doing business online might also be planning a wedding or in the market for a new TV.

So, if you want traffic to a site about weddings, go post a comment on a site where the topic is about weddings.

Having said all that, a real affiliate marketer can drive traffic to their wedding site from a blog about affiliate marketing, but they have to be smart about it.

“Smart” means:

Building credibility by contributing value to the conversation. If your site is about weddings and the post is about traffic strategies, share an experience related to the topic and invite folks to look at a relevant page on your blog.Using your real name or a pen name. Not just a first name either. You gain additional credibility for your blog comment by including your real FULL name. Even something like Super Affiliate Wendy W. is more likely to encourage visits than “cheap shoes”.Having a Gravatar. Want even more credibility? Get a gravatar to show alongside your thoughful comment.

All that said, remember that you want traffic that stays on your site.

The fellow who pops by “acia berry wonders” from a bizop blog won’t help your bounce rate if he only sticks around for a half a second.

So take the time to post real comments using your real name and point to content on your site of real value to your visitors.

Wash on a Monday

You’ve probably heard of the old housewives’ system for managing housework and other chores.

It went like this:

Wash on Monday,
Iron on Tuesday,
Mend on Wednesday,
Churn on Thursday,
Clean on Friday,
Bake on Saturday,
Rest on Sunday.

That routine helped those women stay organized and focused on their chores so that they could get everything done — and they had a LOT to do!

As bloggers, we too have many different things to accomplish, and although I typically hate the thought of following a schedule, I do find it helpful to have some sort of plan to help me stay focused and on task.

Take blog post writing for example.

I prefer to write two or more blog posts in a sitting to queue up for later delivery. The day of the week and time of day I write depends primarily on the time of year. In the winter, I write first thing in the morning; while in the summer I like to write in mid-afternoon when it’s too hot to be outside. I also like to group article topics by season and will start working on my Christmas season posts as early as July.

Granted, that doesn’t look much like a daily writing schedule, but it works for me.

Create your own schedule.

Consider what works for you and your current schedule. Here are some points to ponder as you create your own blogging routine.

At what time of day do you feel most alert and motivated? That’s probably the best time to write articles.On which day of the week do you have the most time to write?Does your job allow you time during the day to write? This can be a great escape from the drudgery of work too!Do you work nights? I used to write my best University essays while on midnight shifts.Can your partner take the kids to a weekly class to free up time for you to write?

Figure out what schedule suits you best and set that day and time to write.

You should also consider that the day you publish your articles will be busier than others with reader responses to your post, so make sure you can set some time aside for comment moderation on those days. The days you publish are also good days to comment on other blogs with links to your new post.

Provided you don’t work in the online business opportunites market which is rife with weekly product launches and ‘extra’ writing, you should schedule a separate session for product research and review writing. You can do this bi-weekly or even monthly when you have sufficient products to promote on your site.

Avoid distractions.

I tend to be easily distracted, so I’ve set things up to make sure that I’m not (usually) interrupted when I write.

I go into my office prepared to write, so I bring a beverage and clean my desk of paperwork that might change my focus. I refrain from checking my email, Google Reader and other sites by keeping programs and browser windows closed. I prefer a quiet room for writing, so I’ll shut my office door and/or the windows depending on the noise levels inside and out.

My affiliate managers know that I prefer to be contacted by email – not phone. If the phone does ring while I’m writing, I just don’t answer it.

Make your schedule and your environment as distraction-free as possible to minimize work interruptions.

Now commit to your blogging schedule.

You won’t need to work your schedule for too long before you notice that your workload becomes both easier and more fluid.

The key to getting to the point where it is easy is committing to your plan.

For example, when you know that you’re going to sit down between 9AM and 11AM every Tuesday to write a few blog posts, you’ll start thinking about your topic ideas and article flow well in advance. Maybe you’ll jot down a few ideas on paper or create a rough draft on your blog when you have a few spare minutes during the previous week. In that way, you’re already prepared to write and you can get the job done faster.

Once the writing gets easier and faster, you might also be inclined to write more posts which always makes the search engines happier and more productive on your behalf.

Try working a blogging schedule for even just a month and see how good you feel about what you’ve accomplished in terms of content creation and increased revenues!

SEO Blogging Tips: How To Rank Well Without Losing Readers

I’ve been professionally blogging for a little over a year now. In June of 2009, I was working full-time on my blogs for the first time. Whenever people ask me what the key to me going full-time was, I always give them the same answer: passive search engine traffic.

Search engine traffic is, for the most part, consistent and passive. Once you get about a thousand visitors per day, you’ll get about a thousand visitors per day. Every day. Whether you post or not. Search traffic is also valuable traffic — searchers are more likely to click advertisements, buy products, subscribe to newsletters — they’re more likely to make money.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a common myth in internet marketing and blogging circles that implies that you have to choose between making your readers happy and making Google send more traffic your way. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are a few ways to increase search traffic without ticking off your readers.

User-Friendly Ways to Increase Search TrafficKeyword Titles. My favorite method for writing titles is to put the keyword at first, and then a normal title afterwards. For example, this post is called “.” The obvious first two words are keyword titles. Doing this means the keyword is still in the title first thing, and yet the title is still easy to read.Link Building. Link building is the crux of search traffic. If you have a lot of links, you’ll have a lot of search traffic. It’s unavoidable. And your readers will never notice it. Try to manually build at least 5 links per week through article marketing and guest post writing. It’ll pay off in the end, I promise.Internal Linking. Internal linking is probably one of the most underused SEO tactics by bloggers. If you have a few pages you’re trying to get ranked on Google, link to them constantly in your own pages. I have a set of nearly 10 posts on every one of my websites that I link to from most of my new posts. This insures that Google and other search engines realize those are the most important and desirable posts on the website — giving them more authority. There are plugins that make internal linking almost automatic.SEO-Friendly Sidebar. Your sidebar is an important place to link to your most important SEO pages. Have a special widget that links to your most important articles, and use only keywords for the links. This helps with internal linking, and insures that every page links to the important pages.Search-Only Ads. While this isn’t technically a tactic for getting search traffic, it’s certainly a tactic for monetizing search traffic better. Find a way to make advertisements show only for search-engine visitors — this means you don’t upset your regular readers with too many ads, and can still profit from the easily monetized search traffic. Have your cake and eat it too.A 6-Month Case Study

I decided to launch a case study to see how fast I could get a website to the top of search rankings for a competitive keyword without sacrificing the user experience of the blog. I registered a domain about gold coins (the most popular way to buy gold for small-time/private investors) and began to follow the steps listed above.

I uploaded an article every day that targeted a keyword. I made the content user-friendly. I did the SEO-friendly sidebar, internal linking, and consistently built at least 3 real links every day. That was it. Nothing else.

Within six months the website ranks top 10 results on Google for “gold coins” — an extremely competitive topic that takes on almost every gold dealer in the nation, including hundred-million dollar companies. The site is also on page 3 of Google for just the keyword “gold”, which is effectually taking on every major investing, financial, economic, and news site on the Internet — almost every major money-related website has a section on their site about gold.

The site has premium features so it does cost money for most of their tools but for the access to multiple high quality tools you get on this website the price tag makes it a complete steal.

SEOmoz.org Tools – Another well known and highly reputable SEO website that offers tools to use is SEOmoz.org. This website offers a few free tools and several paid tools that you can use to better optimize your site and get better rankings in the search engines. There are programs that allow you to monitor and track your rankings, view backlinks and see how difficult a potential keyword is to rank for. The free tools on the site are worth trying out but the premium tools offer far more value and data. If search engine optimization plays a large role in your affiliate marketing efforts then getting your hands on these tools is a great idea.

Keyword Elite 2.0 – Another great keyword research tool that can be considered a competitor of Micro Niche Finder is Keyword Elite 2.0 This software program actually does multiple things aside from just basic keyword research and can give you valuable information on how to dominate certain keywords. For any PPC advertisers it also shows you the past successful ads of your competitors and their advertising history. The fee for this software is one time and it’s a great all-in-one option for PPC advertisers.

Market Samurai – Another top keyword research tool that does cost a fee to use is Market Samurai. This is considered by most as another great keyword research tool and competition measuring tool for seeing what keywords and niches can be easily dominated with little work. While this tool does cost money to use it gives you far more valuable data about the keywords and niches you’re targeting, so it virtually pays for itself over time. There’s a trial version of the program you can try out to see if it’s right for you before purchasing it.

As you become more advanced with your affiliate marketing you’ll likely want to use more and more of these tools until you’ve got a pretty good “arsenal” at your disposal. If you can afford to it really is best to have a variety of these services and tools to use so you can get the benefits of each individual one. If you’re uncomfortable with paying money for a tool you’re not sure you’ll use then taking advantage of some of the free services and programs is a great way to test the waters.

Make full use of the trial versions of programs to see if they work for you before committing to the monthly membership or full onetime payment. If you consider yourself an experienced internet marketer but you’re still wary of online programs and services then don’t purchase any service you aren’t completely sold on. There are complete beginners in affiliate marketing who make a fortune using nothing more than free tools and keyword research programs like the Google adword keyword tool. These programs do work well enough but for those who want to relieve some of the work load and get better results from their efforts paid programs and services should be used for the best results.

Christmas in July

Well, it’s now mid-July which of course got me to thinking about Christmas… because summer heat is always such a gift.

Ho, ho, ho.

Actually, I was musing about a ‘’ party that I and my friends had a very long time ago. We roasted a turkey, decorated the rental and strayed from tradition a bit by dining on the boathouse roof.

After entertaining myself with those delightful memories for awhile, I wondered if other people were contemplating .

Finding out was easy enough. I went to Google Insights for Search and searched for the term “Christmas” with results filtered over the last 30 days.

And it looks like I’m not the only one thinking of .

However, I certainly hope that those who were searching for “Christmas tree” in July were thinking about the artificial variety.

To the right of the most prevalent searches related to “Christmas”, Insights reports rising searches.

What is most notable perhaps are the returns for “Christmas holidays”. This is a term that travel bloggers might want to concentrate some effort on over the next couple of months as people plan their visits to (or away from) the relatives.

The rise of ‘Gifts’ and ‘stocking’ are good signs.

Recalling the elbow-to-rib hits I’ve taken in malls on Boxing Day, I know I’m not the only one who starts shopping early for Christmas. And let’s not forget the ‘nuts about Christmas’ types, who keep the brick-and-mortar “Christmas Store” viable all year long.

After seeing those results, I was getting really curious, and had to see if anyone was capitilizing on the term “christmas holidays 2010″ during the merry month of July.

The search returned 20 results and no advertisers.

Broadening the search to “Christmas 2010″ returned tons of results (mostly related to toys to be marketed this year) and only 1 advertiser.

So, it you want to get in there – now is a great time.

Remember — Christmas is ‘evergreen’, and I’m not talking about the trees.

The holiday happens every 365 days (which all those frantic last-minute shoppers seem to forget until December 24th), so there’s always a market, and that market is huge, even in July.

If you’re nuts about Christmas (or any other holiday), you may want to consider taking advantage of the opportunity to get ahead of the pack now.

There are so many different ways you could approach the niche. Create a content-rich site about Christmas traditions, crafts, or fill it with holiday recipes. How about sharing tips for Christmas decorating schemes or tips for surviving the holidays?

Monetizing the site will be easy. Find merchants at affiliate networks that offer exceptionally unique gifts, toys, ornaments and/or books to sell on your site.

Advertise using PPC, and keep your Google Adwords bids low until December, when your sales will soar.

Last, but certainly not least, build and work your list. Share some spirit with your subscribers and you’ll take your place at the top of the tree as a *star* affiliate by the time December rolls around.

WordPress.com Free Hosting is NOT for Affiliate Marketers

I warn affiliate marketers on this site, in the Super Affiliate Handbook and at Affiliate Blogger PRO not to use free hosting services for a variety of different reasons.

Still some insist on doing so despite the warnings.

In case you are one of those who thinks a free blog is too good a deal to pass up and you’re preparing to set up your blog on WordPress.com – here is one good reason NOT to do so, straight from the horse’s mouth, aka. WordPress.com.

Blogs that violate our advertising policy or fall into one of the following categories are not allowed on WordPress.com:

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category.

In the WordPress.com Support Forums they specify that only blogs with BIG traffic numbers or VIP blogs may be exempted from this rule.

Here is another quote from the WordPress.com site:

In addition to AdSense-type ads, please do not use the following services on your blog: sponsored / paid posts including PayPerPost, ReviewMe, and Smorty; affiliate / referral links to the following domains: usercash, clickbank, clickhop, cashrocks, payingcash; clicktrackers (and any similar) and any promotion of the “I made a million on the internet and so can you” type of advertising (i.e. MLM, network marketing, cash gifting, etc.). Paid or sponsored post content is also prohibited. Please check our page on types of blogs for more information about what content is and isn’t welcome on WordPress.com.

OK, so what happens if you decide to ‘try it anyway’?

Well, during my interview with Denise Griffitts this morning, she mentioned that she had 2 (only TWO) affiliate links on a WordPress.com blog that consisted of almost 200 pages and a year’s worth of work.

What happened to that blog?

It was shut down and Denise did NOT have the option of reclaiming her lost material.

So… word to the wise.

If you want to make money online as an affiliate – register a domain and get a proper hosting account with a reputable company like BlueHost.

Don’t risk your hard work, money and your affiliate business for the sake of a couple of bucks.

73,000+ Blogs on Free Hosting Service Shut Down by U.S. Authorities

Wasn’t I just talking about the perils of using free services to host your blog?

Burstnet client, Blogetery.com which offered free and paid services for more than 73,000 blogs, was “terminated by request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server” according to a Burstnet spokesperson on WebHostingTalk.

The spokesperson went on to say “We are limited as to the details we can provide to you, but note that this was a critical matter and the only available option to us was to immediately deactivate the server.”

The server name was bn.affiliateplex.com. I’m sorry if your blog was hosted there and this is the first time you are hearing about this issue.

From my reading of the thread, affiliateplex offered a free blog hosting service (called Blogetery) supported by Adsense. He had been hit with numerous DMCA complaints which were dealt with — however he failed to police the server for bad content. It also looks like affiliateplex had no backups of any kind.

What amazes me is that the operator, affiliateplex, rants endlessly in this thread – apparently oblivious to the serious nature of the offence.

His very first post to the thread “After being BurstNet customer for 7 months my server was terminated without any notification or explanation. They did it on July 9, Friday at 10:40 PM EST. I was out of the city and when I came back on monday….” invalidates his assertion that he “always responded to any abuse report or complaint within 24 hours and remove abusing material“. He goes on to say:

I didn’t do anything illegal, so I’m not worrying about this. But you concern should be your customers in the 1st place, then some law enforcement officials.

The ‘you’ in that statement refers to Burstnet. What affiliateplex fails to acknowledge is that part of Burstnet’s contract which reads”

Your use of the Internet is subject to all applicable local, state, national, and international laws and regulations, Without limiting the other rights available to BurstNET™, BurstNET™ retains the right but not the obligation, in its sole discretion and without prior notice or liability, to restrict and/or terminate your access to the Internet and BurstNET™ if your use of the Internet violates any such laws or regulations, any prohibitions upon your conduct in connection with the Internet raised in this paragraph or otherwise restricts or inhibits any other user
from enjoying the Internet or BurstNET™.

What type of illegal content was on those blogs, we do not yet know as the authorities have seized the server and are investigating the matter. We can only guess that it was very bad stuff.

Anyway, that’s what you get when you put your blog on a free hosting service operated by children.

Don’t run that risk. Put your blog on a REAL hosting service that actually manages their business and protects their clients from bad actors.

Domain Registry Scams

Have you ever received a “Domain Name Expiration Notice” from either the Domain Registry of Canada or the Domain Registry of America such as the one shown here to the right?

If you do get one, just shred it!

The letter will be addressed to you, and opens with “As a courtesy to domain holders we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months“.

It also advises that “You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the Web” and “Failure to renew yur domain name by the expiration date may result in a loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you on the Web”.

Hmmm… that could cause some concern, right?

Well, pay attention to those sections that read “transfer and renew your name from your current Registrar” and “THIS IS A SOLICITATION FOR THE ORDER OF SERVICES AND NOT A BILL“, or you may get tricked into transfering and renewing your domain for 1, 2 or 5 years at exorbitant prices — $160.00CDN for five years.

Don’t get fooled!!

If you get a letter or email from the Domain Registry of America, trash it and file a complaint with the FTC. If you get one from the Domain Registry of Canada, please read and follow the information supplied by the Competition Bureau all the way back in 2001.

How To Profit Through Conversation

Barry and I know these four people personally, and we can vouch for everything that I’ve written here.

Okay, yeah, the names have been changed, but the relevant facts are correct.

They all do what we do — make a living by extracting information from others.

A mentor we know likes to say that “life is designed in conversation,” and it’s so true.

That basis is the root for nearly everything we do — and that’s because secrets are discovered, ideas are created, thoughts are provoked, and answers are revealed during the course of asking the right questions of the right people…

But again, sometimes you need to learn how to do it right from someone who’s been there, done that, or you’ll end up spinning your wheels and wasting time (and energy and money) rather than leveraging time and energy, and making money.

Cookie Stuffing Could Put Affiliates Behind Bars for 20 Years

Thinking of playing some blackhat games like “cookie stuffing”? Think again. It’s a criminal activity that could land you in jail.

Back in August 2008, eBay filed a civil suit against 4 affiliates, alleging fraud, racketeering activity, wire fraud and unauthorized access of eBay’s servers.

Following an investigation by the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Department, 2 indictments were handed down against two of the affiliates, on June 24, 2010. They were charged with wire fraud and criminal forfeiture. The affiliates appeared before the court on July 22, 2010 and plead not guilty. They were released on $100,000 property bonds and had to surrender their passports.

Sound scarey?

Well, it gets worse. The maximum penalties they can face if found guilty is:

Imprisonment of 20 yearsMaximum fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain/loss (whichever is greater)3 years of supervised release$100 special assessment (per count)

How Many Blogs?

As I entered the conference hall, I overheard a young seminar attendee proudly proclaim, “I have 1000 blogs!“.

His companion’s response was so intense that I thought she might swoon, so I moved hastily to find a seat on the other side of the room and contemplate what I’d just heard.

One thousand blogs, indeed.

She must have thought she’d just hit the rich blogger jackpot.

I wonder however if the young man told her how much money it cost him to register and host those blogs? Or, how much time it took to set each blog up? Or, if each of those blogs was a ‘splog’ with content scraped (stolen) from more credible bloggers? OR, how much money each of those blogs made in a month?

Let me guess. Maybe a buck each for a gross total of 12 grand a year?

Hopefully she figured out that he wasn’t really a rich blogger when she saw his ’77 Celica in the hotel parking lot.

Then again, I know folks with only 20 real blogs who aren’t exactly getting rich blogging either.

They’re affiliating in all the ‘lucrative niches’ with blogs about diets and weight loss, acne and diabetes cures, muscle building, dating, affiliate marketing, how to make money blogging, search engine marketing, credit and finance, debt reduction, travel, self-help and … you guessed it, the wonders of acai berry.

Not much wrong with those markets. They’re big, evergreen and I’m in a few of them myself.

They’ve invested in all the training courses and ‘essential tools’ — keyword research tools, link cloaking and tracking software, site building software, seo tools, article spinners, nifty templates, etc.

They work very hard, spending long hours tending to their sites. They also spend gobs of time researching the web for new tools and training that will give them the ‘edge’ they need to get more traffic to their blogs.

And yet after investing all that time and money, the few visitors their blogs do get don’t buy what they are promoting.

So, what’s the problem?

The problem isn’t their choice of market. Neither is it a failure to invest time and money in their business.

The problem is lack of focus and having their most precious resource – time – spread far too thin.

If your blogging business resembles that described above, here are a few suggestions that will give you the ‘edge’ you seek.

Pick one of your existing blogs — just ONE.Focus exclusively on that blog alone for the next 90 days.If the blog’s main market is huge, focus on a sub-category of the topic.Get your autoresponder opt-in form up on the blog. VERY important!Set up your blog broadcast so your posts automatically go out to your subscribers.Pick a few products to promote and write reviews.Write 3 – 5 blog posts relevant to each of those products.Moderate and respond to comments left by your readers.Visit related forums and blogs and leave helpful comments with a link back to your blog.If your blog needs a fresh look, install a new theme.

Perhaps most importantly, make a commitment to visit other blogs only to research your market’s interests for the purpose of article writing and to share valuable information through comments.

To keep your focus on marketing, consider outsourcing those tasks that your find difficult and/or time consuming.

Last but not least — make sure that the blog you choose to focus on is making money before you start working on another.

Hint: I worked in only one niche for the first 5 years I was online.

Mobile Marketing: The New PPC

I confess. You won’t often see me with a cell phone glued to my ear (except maybe at a conference if I’m pretending to be busy) but I am truly a luddite in that regard.

As of 2009, 60% of the humans on earth were reported by the UN to possess a cellular telephone. More significantly, there are more than 5 billion cell phone subscriptions currently active in the world.

5 BILLION.

Too, 4 out of every 5 teens carries a wireless device/mobile phone and over 57% consider it the the main key to in their social lives. They are definitely NOT luddites.

Google saw the writing on the wall, so it’s no wonder they scooped up AdMob for $750 million back in May. AdMob was one of the first companies to serve ads inside mobile applications on the Android and iPhone platforms.

On the official Google blog…

As mobile phone usage increases, growth in mobile advertising is only going to accelerate. This benefits mobile developers and publishers who will get better advertising solutions, marketers who will find new ways to reach consumers, and users who will get better ads and more free content.

The global mobile marketing advertising budget is estimated to be valued at over $16 Billion by 2011.

Now imagine putting your marketing message in front of just a small percentage of those cell phone users.

How to Establish Yourself and Your Blog Locally

We’ve been all taught that in order for us to make money blogging, we need to target large countries like US and Canada. The main reason behind this is because the audience from that country is more profitable than the audience in your location, for example here, Philippines.

Although there is nothing wrong in that, we must also not forget that establishing our local presence is equally as important as getting readers from those countries. The fact is our local demographics would still dictate how credible we are on a certain field.

While getting traffic from bigger countries is a lot easier, establishing a presence in your own country could mean more because its almost unrealistic to get press coverage from other countries, or get clients if you’re doing consulting and even get yourself popular. Building a personal brand plays a crucial role on your profitability as a whole and I’ve seen a lot of bloggers that are almost unknown in other countries that make huge money online mainly because of the reputation they built here.

So since last year, I started working my butts off on getting known here more and building relationships with prominent figures here. In this post, I am going outline the different ways to promote yourself and establish your expertise locally. It starts now:

1. Attending Conferences related to your Niche

Although not all niches have specific events assigned to them, there’s still a good chance that there is one for your niche. I wasn’t so keen on attending conferences and events here until last year when I realized that I need to start networking with my fellow countrymen.

Just last month I attended iBlog 6 Summit and it was really a huge opportunity for me to introduce myself and connect with people on the same industry. Attending conferences whether big or small is definitely the first step. Make the most of it, network with people, and build relationships because these people are either going to be your future customers or business partners.

2. Getting Into Local Forums

When we do forum marketing, what we usually aim for is the quantity of members. Oftentimes, we go to sites like Digital Point, Sitepoint and WarriorsForum because they have a huge number of members. That being said, we should never forget that we can also participate in local forums and still reap the same benefits. Why? Because in local forums, most people are likely to listen to you, communicate with you because they know you are something that they can be trusted considering the fact you’re on the same country.

3. Turning into Your Market Leaders

When I was getting started, I was lucky enough to have people like Carl Ocab and J. Racoma (two prominent people here) walk me through all of the things I need to get through to get started. Although its unrealistic to all of a sudden try to make friends with big people while just getting started, you can definitely work it out at a time.

You can start out small by just simply commenting on their articles or reaching out to them through social media. Then you can shoot them a private message. Just remember not to be annoying or demanding too much. Remember, relationships just like anything are built over time and there’s no point on rushing things.

4. Running Local Advertising Campaigns

If you have the cash then certainly you can get running faster. Pay-Per Click is one of the quickest ways to generate traffic so thats the first one you may want to use. Use Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing and target your local audience and make sure your ad is running ONLY in your country.

Through testing and tweaking, you can improve your campaigns and have better conversions. This is not cheap since youre paying per click so make sure you scale your campaigns carefully before diving into it. You may want to make sure that you know the terms and services as well so you’ll not be wasting your precious money.

5. Holding Contests

There’s no other quicker way doing this than holding contests. Again this may require an initial investment on your part or if you could get sponsors, the better. Make sure you strategize your contest since there would be obviously some people who would join your contest for just the sake of joining it.

You can determine the success of your contest by observing the drop-off rate. If you are getting 1000 visitors a day during your contests and after the contest it drops to 20 a day then that would be considered as a failure.

In running contests, make sure that it is properly aligned to your niche and to the audience you are targeting. Its hard to make people stick to you when they aren’t really interested and all they care for is the contest.

Getting into local Scenes and establishing your presence can be quite a bit tricky. After all, you need quality more than quantity but the problem is low quantity is a factor even from the start (Unless youre from US).

The key in all of this is overdelivering something, and building relationships. It doesn’t happen overnight but with the 5 methods I mentioned above, it wouldn’t take that long for you and your brand to get known in your own location.

Super Secret Traffic Generation Method Kept Secret On The Internet

So, you’ve decided that you want to make money online, that’s cool but there’s just one problem. How are you supposed to compete with inferior knowledge, inferior skills and an inferior budget.

In order for a “system” that you’ve design to be profitable and easy to manage, it has to have two desirable features. a) it needs to be automated and b) it needs to convert visitors into buyers. This married to another very important aspect of Internet Marketing; the source of your traffic. Your traffic will determine how much success you have online.

There’s only one problem with descent traffic and that’s cost. The saturated arena of PPC is hardly a place to start. You’ll spend more than you make (without a doubt) and the truth is, you don’t need it. Sure it’s a good way of targeting your traffic, but there are much more cost effective ways of doing this and having the same results.

Did you know that only 5% of traffic on the internet is generated through search engines? This is a bold statement, but it’s true! 85% of ALL traffic online, comes from display marketing. You know, those irritating teeth whitening offers you see on almost every single page on the internet? That’s display marketing (also known as banner marketing or buying media).

So now you know where all of the traffic online comes from, are you sick of competing with 99% of other marketers out there for only 5% of the potential traffic out there? You don’t need to answer that because I already know the answer.

Buying media is a really good way of generating traffic and this is how it works.

Step 1 – Testing

Firstly, you’ll need to make sure that your landing page (if you have one – not required if your direct linking) is all set up and ready for testing. You can use Google Website Optimizer to do this, as well as StatCounter. This will give you a good idea of how much traffic you’re generating and how well each of your landing pages are doing (Website Optimizer is used to split test your offer).

Once you’ve done that, you may also another really valuable tool; ClickTale. ClickTale allows you to set up “recordings” of your visitors. You can watch (in real time) what they do on your site and evaluate the effectiveness of the various different aspects of your landing page, such as the copy or images etc. Once all of this is in place, you’re then ready to “flood” your offer.

Step 2 – Demographics

This is an often overlooked part of the average newbie’s marketing drills. You need to know who your offer appeals to (you’ll be surprised). Once you know who you’re targeting, you can then start to look for sites that relate to your market, product or service.

Finding out demographic data is really easy to do. You’ve got Compete.com, Quantcast.com, Google AdPlanner and Alexa.com. All of these sites allow you a small amount of demographical data, but it’s enough for a simple campaign. I would recommend getting the free SEO Tools Firefox plug-in by SEO Book.

Once you have found the sites you’re looking for, you can then start comparing the demographic data. Choose the site that has the nearest match and go with that one.

Step 3 – The maths

It’s important that you are aware of the potential earnings of your offer before you begin any sort of display campaign. You could work out (by looking at the traffic data in Compete.com) how many unique visitors a site has. From there you can work out how much money you can spend and still manage to be in profit.

You’re looking for at least a 200% ROI (return on investment) and initially, you’re going to use the most conservative figures to work out how much you can spend.

Let’s say that a site has 10,000 visitors a month. You should be able to convert 1% of this traffic to click on your offer. That leaves us with 100 people who see our ad.

If we, again using extremely conservative estimations, manage to convert 1% of that 100 into a buyers, that means you will make one sale. Now, you know, that if you sold X ebook for $20, that you can afford to spend $10 on advertising it (giving you the 200% ROI). That means that you can (in this example) spend $10 on 10,000 views.

Would you get excited now if I told you, you could get 1,000 views for as little as 5c? (No need to answer that one).

Step 4 - Approaching the sites with an offer

Now that you’ve done your homework, you know who and where you’re going to be sourcing your traffic from, and you also know how much you are willing to pay per 1,000 impressions. It’s now time to start approaching websites with offers for advertising.

This can be done in a number of different methods. You can either look for an “advertise here” link and follow the instructions, or you can contact the site owner directly with an offer. NOTE: some websites have 3rd party advertising networks that manage the advertising on their sites for them, all you have to do if this is the case, is look near the advertisements on the page and find a text link that says advertise.

If you’re just starting out, it is advisable that you avoid the bigger sites as again saturation will kill your business, there are loads of websites out there that don’t make enough money and are always looking for other sources of income.

TOP TIP: If you find a site that only has AdSense on it, then you are going to want to promote on there. Here’s a simply formula to work out how much money a site makes using adsense.

For every 100 visitors to an adsense site, the site owner will make $1. All you’ve got to do is work out your potential profit, and try to beat the amount of money made by the webmaster of the site.

Step 5 – The Creative’s

This is the daunting part, finding the right banners to put onto the site. Luckily, you can outsource banners for a relatively small amount of money, either using the Warrior Forum (warriors for hire) or some similar service like elance.com or oDesk.com.

Make sure your banner has contextual relevance for your users (doesn’t promise more than the site can deliver or isn’t misinforming them) in relation to your offer.

Make sure your banner sticks out and ALWAYS make sure that you use different creative’s and test which one works best. Doing this will allow you (further on down the line) to have a fully automated proven money printing machine!

That’s it…

Now that you know about this secret method of pulling in traffic, it’s time you stepped out from the crowd of dazed newbie’s, stop paying extortionate prices for PPC, and start growing your internet marketing skills.

We all hear about beginners coming into the internet marketing industry and blowing thousands on PPC, purchasing lame products and putting all of their eggs in one basket—leaving them flat broke and frustrated in the end. That being said what are the 5 deadly affiliate marketing mistakes you’re most likely making? Let’s take a look at some of the most common and “deadliest.”

1st Mistake: Picking the wrong niche.

Regardless of how you’re sending traffic, if you send the most targeted visitors possible to a sales page in the wrong niche you won’t generate sales. There are certain markets you should aim for and if you find yourself in a niche where the sales pages and products just aren’t converting, you may have yourself a dud. The good news is you can easily remedy this by picking a different niche that is full of desperate buyers. For example pick something broad and where people absolutely need a solution. Things like weight loss and hair loss related products convert very well for this exact reason.

2nd Mistake: Forgetting to track and monitor ROI.

If you’re running a campaign on Google Adwords or another PPC network you’ll want to make sure you’re tracking every last click, impression and sale. Knowing exactly how well your traffic is converting into sales is critical for staying profitable and not running yourself into a hole. For example if you send $50 worth of traffic to a sales page and lose half of it to one $25 sale, you’ll need to take this into consideration when tweaking your campaigns. Always track and monitor your business model for maximum performance.

3rd Mistake: Forgetting to build a list.

This is one of the most common problems that are seen time and time again. Regardless of the niche you’re in you should build a list so you can profit from it multiple times instead of just the initial sale you make. 4th Mistake: Poorly written and formatted sales copy.

5th Mistake: Ignoring valuable up-sell opportunities.

If you’ve got a sales process where you’re going straight to the checkout page then you’re definitely leaving money on the table—big money. Regardless of what you’re selling your customer there is always something else you can promote to make a bit more money. Always split test and carefully choose what you up-sell but make sure you implement this strategy as soon as possible since every sale could be bringing in double, triple or quadruple the profit.
